FAQ

Why LCSW supervision?
Social workers need supervision to become licensed in order to practice independently.

How do I become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Texas?
A Licensed Master Social Worker must obtain a minimum of 3,000 clinical work hours and 100 supervision hours from a Board-approved supervisor. This is to be completed over a period of 24-48 months. After submitting required forms to the Board, you will then be eligible to sit for the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) clinical exam to obtain your license.

What are supervision meeting requirements?
The board suggests meeting with your supervisor a minimum of four hours per month AND no fewer than two supervisory sessions per calendar month. Individual and/or group sessions will be provided twice a month, completing two hours per session. With this structure, you will obtain your 100 supervision hours in 24 months. Supervision may be completed with a combination of individual and group sessions.

Employment qualifications for supervision hours:
Full-time employment: You need to be working at least 30 hours per week to complete supervision in 24 months.
Part-time employment: You need to be working at least 15 hours per week to complete supervision within 48 months. (You cannot surpass 48 months to complete the process.)

May I complete LCSW supervision outside my place of employment?
Yes. If the board-approved supervisor is not employed by the agency to provide supervision towards licensure, you are required to submit a letter from the agency executive or your supervisor on agency letterhead which authorizes you to complete supervision with the outside supervisor.
